I graduated from the University of Exeter in 2008 with a BSc in Psychology and then took a year out before completing the GDL and LPC at the College of Law, London. During my year out I divided my time between earning money, getting legal work experience and applying for training contracts. I also managed to spend 6 weeks travelling around Morocco over the summer.
I found Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge (as it was then named) through LawCareers.net, where I began to amass my research about the training opportunities at the firm and what I could expect over the two years. I read more on the firm's website and decided this was definitely a firm that I could see myself at; training and beyond. The firm put a real emphasis on their team being a friendly and interesting bunch of people. They also had a relatively low intake of trainees, something that appealed to me, as I didn't want to end up being a small cog in a big wheel.
The Edwards Wildman application form was actually one of the first ones that I started filling out. I spent a long time getting my answers into tip-top shape before submitting as I was so keen to get an interview. I was delighted when I found out I'd been shortlisted for an assessment day. The team exercise was challenging and it was quite difficult to make myself heard among all the candidates. However I kept my cool and offered to do the numbers side of the task, so as to be helpful but not overbearing. The group exercise was followed by verbal and numerical reasoning tests. I really enjoyed this bit (being a bit of a maths geek!) but would really recommend any potential trainees spending some time preparing for this section of the day as it will help give you confidence.
When I found out I'd made it through to partner interview I was on cloud 9. Whilst waiting for my interview slot I spent time re-reading my CV and application form and thinking about myself in a positive light. It is, after all, very difficult to speak about yourself in the glowing way that is necessary to come across well in an interview. I enjoyed the time that I spent chatting to the partners and came out of the interview feeling on top of the world.
I got the telephone call from the firm offering me the training contract and I cancelled all the other interviews I had lined up. I was so happy to have got my dream job and have to admit even crying a bit on the phone! I've started my training contract sitting in Insurance Litigation and Edwards Wildman is everything I imagined it to be. I have been given a wide variety of work and am really relied upon in the department in order to do important work. There is a friendly atmosphere around the office and I get on with everyone, especially all of my fellow trainees.
I would absolutely recommend a training contract with Edwards Wildman.
